A Testimony from Leap of Faith

Spreading the Word. Reaching the World.

A woman entered the bookshop—restless, nervous, and clearly unwell. There was a sense of urgency about her, as though she was searching for something but unsure what it might be.

She asked for a book. “Something interesting,” she said. “Something that will grip me.”

A Cry Beneath the Surface

As she spoke, her frustration became clear. “Religion!” she said with visible disgust. “Are all these books religious? I don’t want religious things. I’m ill, on the edge of a nervous breakdown. My life is in a mess. I cannot sleep. I just need something to take my mind off it—Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie… anything like that.”

Behind her words was a deeper cry—one of exhaustion, anxiety, and quiet desperation.

A Different Kind of Answer

The response came gently. “I, too, have been ill,” the bookseller shared, “and have known sorrow and grief. I, too, have read Sherlock Holmes—but he didn’t help.”

The woman paused. “Did any author help you?” she asked.

Reaching for a simple copy of the Gospel of John, the answer came not as a recommendation, but as a testimony. “Jesus helped me. If you are heavy-laden, He is the Burden-bearer. If you have sorrow, He will give you joy. If you are in darkness, He is the Light of the world. If you have sinned, God will forgive you because Jesus died.”

Encountering the Name of Jesus

“Jesus?” she replied. “How can Jesus help me?”

The answer was simple, but full of truth. “Jesus bore our sins and carried our sorrows. You can have peace now through the blood of His cross.”

Something shifted.

The name of Jesus seemed to stop her in her tracks. Her restlessness quietened. The conversation slowed. Together, they walked to the door, and she left with the Gospel and a small booklet titled A New Life.

A Response of Gratitude

Less than ten minutes later, she returned.

In her hands was a small bunch of flowers. Offering them with emotion, she said, “No one has ever spoken to me about Jesus before. No one has ever shown me such understanding and kindness.”

And then, just as quickly as she had come, she was gone.

She was never seen again.

The Power of a Simple Encounter

We do not know what happened next in her story. But we do know this: in a moment of deep need, she encountered both the truth of the Gospel and the love of Christ expressed through a simple act of kindness.

Sometimes, it is not a long conversation or a complex argument that changes a life. Sometimes, it is a moment—a name spoken, a truth shared, a kindness offered.

This is the quiet power of the ministry. This is how lives are touched.

This is how we continue to spread the Word and reach the world.
